πΈ Fertile Window Calculator
Estimate your 6-day fertile window and ovulation date based on your last menstrual period (LMP) and average cycle length. Includes a visual cycle map, predictions for the next 3 cycles, and clinical guidance for trying to conceive.
What Is the Fertile Window?
The fertile window is the period during your menstrual cycle when pregnancy is possible. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), it spans approximately 6 days β the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself.
This window exists because of two key biological facts:
- Sperm survival: Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days after intercourse.
- Egg viability: After ovulation, the egg survives for only 12β24 hours.
This means that intercourse up to 5 days before ovulation can result in pregnancy, because sperm can wait for the egg to be released. Once ovulation occurs, the fertile window closes within about 24 hours.
How to Calculate Your Fertile Window
The calculator uses the calendar method, which is based on the timing of ovulation:
Ovulation Day = Cycle Length β Luteal Phase
where the luteal phase (time from ovulation to the next period) is typically 14 days
Once the ovulation day is known, the fertile window is calculated as:
- Start: Ovulation day β 5 days
- End: Ovulation day (the day itself)
For example, in a 28-day cycle with a 14-day luteal phase, ovulation occurs on day 14. The fertile window would be days 9β14.
Peak Fertility
While the fertile window is 6 days long, the probability of conception is not equal across all days. Research by Wilcox et al. (NEJM 1995) found that:
- Peak probability: Approximately 33% on the day before ovulation, and about 30% on the day of ovulation.
- Moderate probability: About 15% on the day of ovulation.
- Lower probability: Progressively lower on the days further from ovulation.
For best chances of conception, ACOG recommends having intercourse every day or every other day during the fertile window.
Accuracy and Limitations
The calendar method works best for people with regular cycles (21β35 days). Its accuracy decreases with:
- Irregular cycles β when cycle length varies by more than 7 days.
- PCOS, thyroid disorders, or hormonal imbalances.
- Recent use of hormonal contraception β cycles may take 1β3 months to regulate.
- Stress, illness, travel, or significant weight changes.
For greater accuracy, combine this calculator with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), basal body temperature tracking, or cervical mucus observation.

β Fertile Window Calculator FAQ
What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is the 6-day period during your cycle when pregnancy is possible β the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. This is based on ACOG guidance and the survival times of sperm (up to 5 days) and the egg (12β24 hours).
How is the fertile window calculated?
First, ovulation is estimated as Cycle Length β Luteal Phase (typically 14 days). Then the fertile window is calculated as ovulation day β 5 days through ovulation day. For a 28-day cycle, this is days 9β14.
How accurate is a fertile window calculator?
For people with regular cycles (21β35 days), the calendar method is reasonably accurate. However, ovulation can shift by several days from cycle to cycle. For best results, combine with OPKs, basal body temperature, or cervical mucus tracking.
What if my cycle is irregular?
If your cycles vary by more than 7 days, calendar-based predictions become less reliable. Consider using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) or consulting a healthcare provider for personalised guidance.
Can I use this calculator to avoid pregnancy?
No. Calendar-based methods are not reliable for contraception. The typical-use failure rate is about 12β24%. If avoiding pregnancy is your goal, consult your healthcare provider about effective contraceptive options.
What are the signs of ovulation?
Common signs include clear, stretchy cervical mucus (like egg whites), a slight rise in basal body temperature, mild pelvic pain (mittelschmerz), and increased libido.
How long does the egg live after ovulation?
The egg is viable for approximately 12β24 hours after being released from the ovary. This is why the days leading up to ovulation are so important for conception.
How long can sperm survive in the reproductive tract?
Sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes under favourable conditions. This is why the fertile window starts 5 days before ovulation.
How often should we have sex during the fertile window?
ACOG recommends having intercourse every day or every other day during the 6-day fertile window for the best chance of conception.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, this calculator is completely free to use. No registration or personal data storage is required.
