What is GPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of a student's academic performance. It is calculated by averaging the grades obtained in all courses, weighted by the credit hours of each course. GPA is used by educational institutions to evaluate and compare student performance.

GPA scales vary by country and institution. The most common scales are:

How to Calculate GPA

To calculate your GPA, follow these steps:

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Where:

Example Calculation:
Course 1: B (3.0) × 3 credits = 9.0 grade points
Course 2: A- (3.7) × 3 credits = 11.1 grade points
Course 3: A (4.0) × 4 credits = 16.0 grade points
Total Grade Points = 9.0 + 11.1 + 16.0 = 36.1
Total Credits = 3 + 3 + 4 = 10
GPA = 36.1 ÷ 10 = 3.61

Cumulative GPA Formula

Your cumulative GPA is calculated by combining your previous academic performance with your current semester performance:

Cumulative GPA = (Previous GPA × Previous Credits + Current GPA × Current Credits) ÷ (Previous Credits + Current Credits)
Example:
Previous GPA: 3.5 over 30 credits
Current GPA: 3.8 over 12 credits
Cumulative GPA = (3.5 × 30 + 3.8 × 12) ÷ (30 + 12)
Cumulative GPA = (105 + 45.6) ÷ 42 = 150.6 ÷ 42 = 3.59
