What Is HST?
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is a single sales tax that combines the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) with a provincial sales tax into one harmonized rate. It is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and applies to most goods and services sold in participating provinces.
As of 2026, there are five HST provinces: Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland and Labrador (15%), and Prince Edward Island (15%). Nova Scotia reduced its HST from 15% to 14% effective April 1, 2025.
How HST Is Calculated
The HST calculation follows a simple formula:
Tax Amount = Price × Tax Rate
Total = Price × (1 + Tax Rate)
For reverse calculation: Tax Amount = Total × Rate ÷ (1 + Rate)
Example: A $100 item in Ontario (13% HST):
- Tax Amount = $100 × 13% = $13.00
- Total Price = $100 + $13 = $113.00
The same item in Nova Scotia (14% HST) would have $14.00 in tax and a total of $114.00.
HST vs. GST+PST vs. GST
Canada uses three different sales tax systems:
- HST: Single combined rate (5 provinces).
- GST + PST: Two separate taxes on the same receipt (BC, MB, SK).
- GST + QST: Quebec's separate QST administered by Revenu Québec.
- GST only: 5% federal tax with no provincial tax (AB, NT, YT, NU).

❓ 2026 HST Calculator FAQ
What is HST?
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is a single sales tax that combines the federal GST with a provincial sales tax. It is collected by the CRA and applies in five Canadian provinces.
What are the 2026 HST rates?
Ontario: 13%, Nova Scotia: 14% (reduced from 15% on April 1, 2025), New Brunswick: 15%, Newfoundland and Labrador: 15%, Prince Edward Island: 15%.
What is the GST rate in 2026?
The federal GST rate remains 5% across all of Canada in 2026.
Which provinces have HST?
Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
How do I calculate HST on a price?
Multiply the price by the HST rate. For example, $100 × 13% = $13 tax. Total = $100 + $13 = $113.
How do I reverse-calculate HST from a total?
Use the formula: Tax Amount = Total × Rate ÷ (1 + Rate). For example, $113 × 0.13 ÷ 1.13 = $13.00 tax.
What is the difference between HST and GST?
GST is the 5% federal tax. HST combines GST with a provincial tax into a single rate. In HST provinces, you don't see separate GST and provincial tax lines on receipts.
Does Quebec use HST?
No. Quebec uses GST (5%) + QST (9.975%) collected separately. QST is administered by Revenu Québec, not the CRA.
What is the HST registration threshold?
You must register for GST/HST if your taxable revenues exceed $30,000 in a single quarter or over four consecutive quarters.
Can I recover HST I paid on business expenses?
Yes. Registered businesses can claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) to recover the GST/HST paid on eligible business expenses.
What is the difference between forward and reverse HST calculation?
Forward calculates the tax and total from a pre-tax price. Reverse extracts the tax and pre-tax price from a tax-included total.
Is this calculator accurate for all Canadian provinces?
Yes. This calculator uses official CRA 2026 rates for all provinces and territories. Rates are verified and updated.
