What Is Life Expectancy?

Life expectancy is a statistical measure of the average time an organism is expected to live, based on demographic factors including age, gender, race, and current mortality rates. The concept is fundamental to actuarial science, retirement planning, insurance, and public health policy.

This calculator uses period life tables from the Social Security Administration (SSA), which assume that current mortality rates remain constant into the future. While this is a simplification, it provides a consistent and widely accepted baseline for estimating longevity.

How the Calculator Works

The calculation follows these steps:

  • Baseline Estimate (SSA): Starts with the SSA period life table values for a person of your age and gender, which give the average remaining years of life (ex).
  • Ethnicity Adjustment (CDC): Applies an additive adjustment based on CDC/NCHS life tables that report differences by race and ethnicity.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Each lifestyle factor (smoking, exercise, diet, alcohol, BMI, stress, sleep, checkups, social connection) adjusts the estimate by a specific number of years based on established epidemiological research.

Formula: Adjusted Life Expectancy = Baseline + Ethnicity Adjustment + Σ Lifestyle Adjustments

Where each lifestyle factor adds or subtracts years based on its impact on longevity.

Key Lifestyle Impact Estimates

Based on decades of epidemiological research, the following lifestyle factors have been shown to influence life expectancy:

  • Smoking: Heavy smoking reduces life expectancy by 8–12 years; light smoking by 3–5 years; former smokers regain some lost years over time.
  • Exercise: Regular moderate-to-vigorous exercise can add 3–5 years to life expectancy compared to a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Diet: A healthy diet (Mediterranean-style, plant-rich) can add 3–6 years.
  • Alcohol: Heavy alcohol consumption reduces life expectancy by 3–8 years; light-to-moderate consumption has neutral or slightly positive effects.
  • BMI: Obesity reduces life expectancy by 3–10 years; severe obesity by 8–14 years. Being underweight also has negative effects.
  • Stress: Chronic high stress can reduce life expectancy by 2–5 years.
  • Sleep: Poor sleep quality is associated with 2–4 years shorter life expectancy.
  • Social Connection: Strong social ties can add 2–5 years to life expectancy.

❓ Life Expectancy Calculator FAQ

What is life expectancy?

Life expectancy is the average number of additional years a person of a given age and gender is expected to live, based on current mortality rates.

How accurate is this calculator?

This calculator provides estimates based on the best available population data. However, individual longevity can vary significantly due to genetics, environment, healthcare access, and other factors not captured here.

What is a period life table?

A period life table assumes that current mortality rates remain constant into the future. It represents a snapshot of mortality conditions today, not a prediction of future improvements.

How does smoking affect life expectancy?

Heavy smoking can reduce life expectancy by 8–12 years. Light smoking reduces it by 3–5 years. Former smokers regain some, but not all, of the lost years over time.

How much does exercise extend life?

Regular moderate-to-vigorous exercise can add 3–5 years to life expectancy compared to a sedentary lifestyle.

Does diet really affect life expectancy?

Yes. A healthy diet (rich in plants, whole grains, and healthy fats) can add 3–6 years to life expectancy compared to a poor diet.

How does BMI affect longevity?

Obesity can reduce life expectancy by 3–10 years. Severe obesity can reduce it by 8–14 years. Being underweight also has negative effects.

Does stress really shorten life?

Chronic high stress has been linked to a 2–5 year reduction in life expectancy through its effects on cardiovascular health, immune function, and mental health.

How important is sleep for longevity?

Poor sleep quality is associated with 2–4 years shorter life expectancy. Both insufficient and excessive sleep are linked to increased mortality.

What is the average life expectancy in the US?

As of 2025, the US life expectancy at birth is projected to be 79.4 years, with variations by gender, race, and other factors.

How does race/ethnicity affect life expectancy?

Life expectancy varies by race and ethnicity due to differences in healthcare access, socioeconomic factors, and other determinants of health.

Is there a difference between male and female life expectancy?

Yes. Women typically have a longer life expectancy than men by about 5–6 years.

Can I use this calculator for retirement planning?

Yes, this calculator can help you estimate how long you may need retirement savings to last. However, consider using a range of scenarios (conservative, baseline, optimistic) for better planning.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, this calculator is completely free to use. No registration or personal data storage is required. All calculations are performed in your browser.

What data sources does this calculator use?

This calculator uses the Social Security Administration (SSA) 2023 Period Life Table, CDC/NCHS National Vital Statistics Reports, and peer-reviewed research on lifestyle factors and longevity.
