How the Portion Calculator Works

This calculator helps you determine the right amount of food for any situation. It offers two powerful modes:

  • Food Portion Mode: Calculates the recommended serving size per person and total amount needed based on the number of people and type of food. Uses standard portion guidelines for different food categories.
  • Recipe Scaler Mode: Scales any recipe up or down for your desired number of servings. Enter your ingredients and amounts, and the calculator handles the math.

Standard Portion Guidelines

Meat (main course): 150-200g (5-7 oz) per person

Fish: 120-150g (4-5 oz) per person

Pasta & Grains: 75-100g (2.5-3.5 oz) dry per person

Rice: 60-75g (2-2.5 oz) dry per person

Potatoes: 150-200g (5-7 oz) per person

Vegetables: 100-150g (3.5-5 oz) per person

Salad Greens: 30-50g (1-1.5 oz) per person

Dessert: 100-150g (3.5-5 oz) per person

Recipe Scaling Formula

Scaling Factor = Desired Servings รท Original Servings
New Amount = Original Amount ร— Scaling Factor

For example: If a recipe serves 4 and you need 6 servings, the scaling factor is 6 รท 4 = 1.5. Multiply every ingredient by 1.5 to get the new amounts.
