What Is Visceral Fat?
Visceral fat is the “hidden” fat stored deep inside the abdominal cavity, wrapped around vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. Unlike subcutaneous fat (the fat you can pinch under the skin), visceral fat is metabolically active and releases inflammatory compounds that are strongly linked to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver.
Because visceral fat is hidden, you can't judge it by looking in the mirror. Waist circumference is one of the best simple proxies , and the visceral fat rating (popularized by Tanita body-composition scales) converts an estimate of visceral fat area into a simple 1–59 scale, where 1–12 is considered healthy and 13–59 is considered high.
How Does the Visceral Fat Rating Calculator Work?
This calculator estimates visceral fat area (VFA) using a validated anthropometric algorithm based on waist circumference, age, gender, and (for women) BMI. The resulting VFA is then converted to a 1–59 rating, where 1 rating point ≈ 10 cm² of visceral fat on an MRI reference scan.
Men (Caucasian):
x = 0.03 × waist(cm) + 0.02 × age + 0.98
VFA (cm²) = ex
Rating = VFA ÷ 10
Men (Non-Caucasian):
x = 0.03 × waist(cm) + 0.02 × age + 0.66
Women (Caucasian):
x = 0.03 × BMI + 0.02 × waist(cm) + 0.02 × age + 1.33
Women (Non-Caucasian):
x = 0.03 × BMI + 0.02 × waist(cm) + 0.02 × age + 1.13
The calculator also computes your waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) , a simple, powerful screening tool. A WHtR below 0.50 is generally considered healthy; above 0.50 suggests central (abdominal) fat accumulation.
Why Use This Visceral Fat Rating Calculator?
- Estimates hidden fat: Uses waist, age, and gender to estimate visceral fat area , no MRI needed.
- 1–59 rating scale: Matches the scale used by popular Tanita body-composition monitors.
- Multiple metrics: Also shows BMI, waist-to-height ratio, and a health category.
- Visual chart: See your rating in context against the full 59-point scale.
- Ethnicity adjustment: Choose Caucasian or non-Caucasian constants for a better estimate.
- Free & Private: No registration, no data storage.
Understanding Your Visceral Fat Rating
- 1–9: Healthy / low visceral fat. Continue your current lifestyle.
- 10–12: Still within the healthy range, but close to the upper limit. Consider waist-focused improvements.
- 13–15: High visceral fat , early excess. Time to focus on diet, activity, and sleep.
- 16–19: High visceral fat. Strongly associated with metabolic risk. Consult a healthcare professional.
- 20–59: Very high. Significantly increased risk of metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, and cardiovascular disease.
Note: This is an estimate, not a direct measurement. Tanita scales use bioelectrical impedance and proprietary algorithms, so your actual rating on a Tanita device may differ. Use this calculator for education and tracking , not as a medical diagnosis. Consult a healthcare professional for clinical assessment.
❓ Visceral Fat Rating Calculator FAQ
What is a healthy visceral fat rating?
On the 1–59 Tanita scale, 1–12 is considered healthy and 13–59 is considered too high. Within the healthy range, lower is generally better, but some visceral fat is essential for organ protection.
How accurate is this visceral fat rating estimate?
It's a reasonable anthropometric estimate based on validated regression equations, but it's not a direct measurement. MRI and DEXA are the gold standards. Tanita scales use bioelectrical impedance and their own proprietary formulas, so results may differ slightly.
Why does the calculator ask for ethnicity?
The regression constants used to estimate visceral fat area differ between Caucasian and non-Caucasian populations. Selecting the appropriate option gives a more tailored estimate.
Can I use this calculator if I'm Asian?
Yes , choose “Non-Caucasian” in the advanced options. Note that Asian populations often have higher visceral fat at the same waist circumference, so clinical cutoffs for waist may be lower. This calculator provides an estimate, but your doctor may use different thresholds.
What is waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)?
WHtR = waist circumference ÷ height. It's a simple screening tool for central obesity. A value below 0.50 is generally healthy; above 0.50 suggests excess abdominal fat. It's often considered more useful than BMI alone because it directly reflects fat distribution.
How can I reduce visceral fat?
Visceral fat responds well to lifestyle changes: a calorie deficit (especially reducing refined carbs and added sugars), regular aerobic and strength training, adequate sleep, and stress management. Even modest weight loss (5–10% of body weight) can significantly reduce visceral fat.
Does spot reduction work for belly fat?
No , you can't target visceral fat with abdominal exercises alone. Visceral fat is reduced through overall fat loss driven by diet and exercise. Core exercises strengthen muscles but don't specifically burn visceral fat.
Is visceral fat worse than subcutaneous fat?
Yes, visceral fat is more metabolically dangerous. It's biologically active, releasing inflammatory cytokines and free fatty acids directly into the portal circulation, which affects liver function and insulin sensitivity. Subcutaneous fat is largely inert by comparison.
How often should I recalculate my visceral fat rating?
Every 4–8 weeks is reasonable for tracking progress, especially if you're actively losing weight or changing your lifestyle. Measure your waist at the same time of day and under similar conditions for consistency.
Can I use this calculator if I'm pregnant?
No. This calculator is not designed for pregnant women. Pregnancy changes body composition and waist circumference significantly. Consult your healthcare provider for appropriate assessments.
How do I measure my waist correctly?
Measure at the midpoint between the bottom of your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest), keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing the skin. Breathe out normally before reading the measurement.
How do I convert measurements between metric and imperial?
This calculator automatically converts between metric and imperial units. Simply select your preferred unit system, enter your measurements, and the calculator handles the conversions for you.
