A water footprint is the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services consumed by an individual, community, or business. It includes both the water you use directly (from the tap) and the "virtual water" hidden in the products you buy, the food you eat, and the energy you use.

According to the Water Footprint Network, the global average water footprint is about 3,400 liters per person per day. In the United States, the average is significantly higher at around 7,800 liters per person per day. Nearly 95% of our water footprint is hidden in the food we eat.
