What Is Ghana's PAYE Tax?

The Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system in Ghana requires employers to deduct income tax directly from employees' wages and remit it to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). The tax is calculated using progressive rates based on annual taxable income.

For the 2026 tax year, the following rates and thresholds apply:

Annual Chargeable Income (GHS) Rate
0 – 5,0000%
5,001 – 9,8005%
9,801 – 18,20010%
18,201 – 48,20017.5%
48,201 – 96,20025%
96,201 and above30%

Personal Allowance: GHS 5,000 per year (GHS 416.67 per month) for individuals under 65.
SSNIT Contribution: 5.5% of gross income (employee portion).

The chargeable income is calculated as:

Chargeable Income = Gross Income − SSNIT − Personal Allowance − Other Deductions

For example, a monthly gross income of GHS 5,000 (GHS 60,000 annual):

  • SSNIT (5.5%) = GHS 3,300 (annual)
  • Personal Allowance = GHS 5,000
  • Chargeable Income = 60,000 − 3,300 − 5,000 = GHS 51,700
  • Tax calculation:
    • 0% on first GHS 5,000 = GHS 0
    • 5% on next GHS 4,800 = GHS 240
    • 10% on next GHS 8,400 = GHS 840
    • 17.5% on next GHS 30,000 = GHS 5,250
    • 25% on remaining GHS 3,500 = GHS 875
    • Total Tax = GHS 7,205
  • Net Pay = 60,000 − 3,300 − 7,205 = GHS 49,495
