What Is a Pip?

A pip (Percentage in Point or Price Interest Point) is the smallest standardized price movement in forex trading. For most currency pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For pairs involving the Japanese Yen, a pip is the second decimal place (0.01).

The pip value is the monetary value of a one-pip movement in a currency pair. It depends on three factors: the currency pair being traded, the position size (lot size), and the exchange rate.

How Does the Pip Value Calculator Work?

The calculator uses the standard pip value formula:

Pip Value Formula:

Pip Value = (Pip Size × Position Size) / Exchange Rate

With currency conversion:

Pip Value (Account Currency) = Pip Value × Conversion Rate

Where:
Pip Size = 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for JPY pairs
Position Size = Number of units being traded
Exchange Rate = Current market rate of the currency pair

The calculator automatically determines the pip size based on the selected currency pair. For example, EUR/USD at 1.1000 with a standard lot (100,000 units) gives a pip value of approximately $9.09. JPY pairs use a pip size of 0.01, so USD/JPY at 150.00 with a standard lot gives a pip value of approximately 666.67 JPY.

Understanding Pip Values

  • Standard Lot: 100,000 units → ~$10 per pip (for USD pairs)
  • Mini Lot: 10,000 units → ~$1 per pip
  • Micro Lot: 1,000 units → ~$0.10 per pip
  • Nano Lot: 100 units → ~$0.01 per pip

❓ Pip Value Calculator FAQ

What is a pip in forex trading?

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair. For most pairs, it's 0.0001 (4th decimal). For JPY pairs, it's 0.01 (2nd decimal).

How do I calculate pip value?

Pip Value = (Pip Size × Position Size) / Exchange Rate. For example, EUR/USD at 1.1000 with 100,000 units: (0.0001 × 100,000) / 1.1000 = $9.09 per pip.

What is the pip value for a standard lot?

For a standard lot (100,000 units) of a USD-based pair like EUR/USD, one pip is worth approximately $10. For JPY pairs, it varies based on the exchange rate.

What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?

A pipette is a fractional pip, representing one-tenth of a pip. It's the 5th decimal place for most pairs (e.g., 1.12345) and the 3rd decimal for JPY pairs.

How do lot sizes affect pip value?

Larger lot sizes mean higher pip values. A standard lot (100,000 units) has a pip value 10x larger than a mini lot (10,000 units), and 100x larger than a micro lot (1,000 units).

What is a good pip value for risk management?

Risk management typically recommends risking 1-2% of your account per trade. Calculate your position size so that your stop loss in pips does not exceed this risk percentage.

Can I use this calculator for gold or indices?

Yes. For gold (XAU/USD), a pip is typically 0.01. For indices, pip sizes vary. Use the "Custom Pip Size" option to adjust accordingly.

How do I convert pip value to my account currency?

The calculator automatically converts the pip value to your selected account currency using the appropriate exchange rate. Simply select your account currency from the dropdown.

What is the pip value for USD/JPY?

USD/JPY uses a pip size of 0.01. At 150.00, a standard lot (100,000 units) gives a pip value of approximately 666.67 JPY. In USD terms, that's about $4.44 (666.67 / 150.00).

Is this calculator free?

Yes, this calculator is completely free to use. No registration or personal data storage is required. All calculations are performed in your browser.
