How Working Days Are Calculated

This calculator counts the number of working days (business days) between two dates. By default, it excludes:

  • Weekends: Saturdays and Sundays (or your custom work week)
  • US Federal Holidays: 11 official holidays (toggle any on/off)
  • Custom Holidays: Any dates you add to the holiday list

You can customize the calculation by:

  • Choosing which days of the week count as working days (4, 5, or 6-day work week)
  • Toggling individual US federal holidays on/off
  • Adding custom holidays for your organization or region
  • Choosing whether to count the start and end dates

The formula used is:

Working Days = Total Days − Weekend Days − Holidays

Where "Holidays" includes both US federal holidays (that are toggled on) and custom holidays.

  • New Year's Day — January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day — January 19
  • Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day) — February 16

  • Juneteenth National Independence Day — June 19
  • Independence Day (Observed) — July 3
  • Labor Day — September 7
  • Columbus Day — October 12
  • Veterans Day — November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day — November 26
  • Christmas Day — December 25

❓ Working Days Calculator FAQ

How do I toggle holidays on/off?

Each US federal holiday has a checkbox in the "US Federal Holidays" section. Check a holiday to include it as a non-working day (exclude it from the working days count). Uncheck it to treat it as a normal working day. You can also use "Select All" or "Deselect All" buttons.

Can I add my own holidays?

Yes! You can add custom holidays using the "Custom Holidays" section. Enter a date and name, then click "Add" to include it in the calculation. This is useful for company-specific holidays, regional observances, or personal days off.

How many working days are in a typical year?

With a standard 5-day work week (Mon-Fri) and all US federal holidays included, there are approximately 250-252 working days per year, depending on how holidays fall and leap years.

What if I work a non-standard work week?

You can adjust the working days per week in the settings. Choose from 4, 5, or 6 working days per week to match your schedule.

Does the calculator include the start and end dates?

By default, both the start and end dates are included in the count. You can change this in the settings to exclude either or both dates.

How do I calculate working days for a project timeline?

Enter your project start date as the start date and your project deadline as the end date. The calculator will show you the number of actual working days available, helping you plan realistic schedules.

Can I use this calculator for payroll purposes?

Yes, this calculator is useful for estimating payroll days, calculating pro-rated salaries, or determining work days for project billing. However, always verify with your specific company policies and local labor laws.

What is the difference between working days and calendar days?

Calendar days include every day of the week (Monday through Sunday). Working days only include business days (your selected work week), excluding weekends and holidays. Working days are used for business planning, while calendar days are used for general date calculations.

Does the calculator account for leap years?

Business day and working day are generally used interchangeably. Both refer to days when normal business operations occur, typically excluding weekends and public holidays.

How do I calculate the number of working days in a month?

Enter the first day of the month as the start date and the last day as the end date. The calculator will show you the number of working days in that month, accounting for weekends and any holidays you've toggled on.

Can I use this calculator for international business?

Yes. You can add holidays for any country or region using the custom holidays feature. The US federal holidays are included by default but can be toggled off if you're working with a different country's holiday schedule.
